Energy Strategy for HIP funding

ASHRAE Guideline 14

2018-present

As an employee and in partnership with clients, Chris has led and consulted on bespoke modelling projects. This involves calibrated simulation of healthcare estates. My role integrates with the full-service offering of teams including architects, engineers, and cost consultancy. The strategy involves modelling a calibrated “baseline”. This is then used to test heat delivery strategies.

A typical project delivers costed decarbonisation strategies for healthcare estates targeting HIP funding.

Bancelles

ASHRAE 90.1

In progress

30,000 sq.m of prime office space located in Paris, comprising of refurbishment and new build and with a target of LEED Gold. The client requires guidance, direction and training for their junior building physicist in LEED and ASHRAE. ASHRAE 90.1 is not something that a novice can set out to achieve themselves. Even the seasoned modeller can make painful mistakes – I speak from experience.

District Heat

CP1 Stage 2 assessments

2017

Early-stage district heat feasibility applying CIBSE CP1 “Heat networks code of practice”. Our scope was aligned to meet as many of the “Objective 2” assessments as possible (given that CP1 had only just been published). Extensive work in Excel was done to model and aggregate utility data to load profile their site and review CHP and heat pump scenarios for financial modelling.

Castle Mills

Architect: BDP, Residential

2019

Castle Mills will provide high quality apartments overlooking Clifford’s Tower with a varied 'roofscape', to compliment York’s historic skyline. 106 dwellings will be created (including affordable flats) while shops and cafes will be created on the ground floor. Respect for the historic Eye of York and York Castle as well as the council’s ambitious climate action plan (28% better than Part L) meant some interesting constraints.

My vision was to design the simplest and most flexible servicing possible to each apartment and speculative commercial space whilst providing community scale low carbon heating infrastructure.

UCL Student Centre

Bloomsbury, Nicholas Hare Architects

2017

The BREEAM Outstanding Student Centre forms part of a major transformation for University College London, setting a benchmark of excellence for all future UCL development projects. It has been designed and constructed on the last piece of undeveloped land in the local conservation area, adjacent to the famous Bloomsbury Theatre.

A mixed mode building with a central atrium for natural ventilation when outside conditions allowed. The energy-focused design, including predicted energy usage (CIBSE TM54) was modelled using IDA ICE’s unique fully coupled simulation model.

DSSR has a reputation in healthcare projects. It's an incredibly diverse sector - the design needs of primary care are very different from secondary and tertiary care. But we do them all, so we need to be flexible and our supply chain needs to be flexible. For this reason, we value Chris at ICE-BERG as a supply chain member.

LEO BENITEZ | SENIOR ENGINEER | DSSR

Many of our projects are bespoke and ambitious. One recent project applied the WELL wellbeing and the NABERS energy standards to upgrade a 20 year-old office. This involves a deep understanding of – sometimes competing – requirements. We need to be sure that the virtual world matches the real one! We trust Chris at ICE-BERG to share these challenges with.

MATTHEW LUBBUCK | DIRECTOR | HIVE

Siemens Energy have been incorporating LCA into equipment design for some time, but our Viking Link project was a step change in its application to civil engineering. We approached Chris at ICE-BERG as the independent LCA assessor. As well as delivering a high-quality end-product, he added value in other ways. Younger team members gained from his experience and our business gained strategic benefit overall.

SCOTT WILLIAMS | PROJECT MANAGER | SIEMENS ENERGY

“Chris is a well-known and respected figure in the built environment community for his technical expertise. When the major update to domestic energy (SAP) software in 2022 was big enough to break some of Atelier Ten’s well-oiled systems, Chris at ICE-BERG brought some CAD and Excel based solutions that helped us bridge the short-term challenge.”

ZAC VANDEVOIR | SENIOR SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTANT | ATELIER TEN

Chris is in our address book under “Building physics ninja!”

RICHARD STONE | DIRECTOR | [PS]K

We are persistently driving innovation both in-house and throughout our supply chain. We used Chris at ICE-BERG to fill in knowledge gaps on Lifecycle Carbon Assessment as we were getting to grips with it. We were very pleased with the results, and it gave us strategies, tools (or “hacks”), to see us on our way.
